SUNNY BUECK
Crystalline Glaze Pottery
Crystalline glaze was discovered by accident during the Sung Dynasty of Ancient China.
The tiny crystals formed as a result of the slow cooling of the kiln and were considered an undesirable effect. The technique was abandoned until the 1800's when the Western world discovered the wonderful beauty of porcelain.
In the 1960's this art was again taken up by a few individual studio potters.
They produced work as a special line which was highly collected by connoisseurs.
To this day, there are only a few hundred people in the entire world who have taken on the extreme challenge of producing crystalline glazed pottery.
Sunny Bueck is one of these magical artists.
"I first began my experimentation with crystalline glazes about seven years ago.
The uniqueness, the high failure rate, and the complex chemistry of crystalline glazes seemed to offer a challenge I couldn't resist.
Crystalline glaze is a marriage of science and art."
